The Impact of Globalization on Cross-Cultural Communication
By Lowell C. Matthews and Bharat Thakkar
‘As
society becomes more globally connected the ability to communicate across
cultural boundaries has gained increasing prominence. Global businesses must
understand how to communicate with employees and customers from different
cultures in order to fulfill the organization’s mission and build value for
stakeholders. The use of technology has had a profound impact on how businesses
communicate globally and market their products and services.’
Technology
has had more of an impact to globalisation than anything else in the world. I
know my quote specifically targets businesses, but the same thoughts can be
applied to globalisation as a whole. One of the key pillars of unity is
communication, it’s not possible to understand another person if you have no
other way to communicate. Technology has almost brought down the barriers that
blocked communication worldwide. With Telephones, emails, texts and more
recently Skype and other websites like Facebook or twitter; it has never been
easier to get in touch with someone on the other side of the world, and I think
this is a great thing.
People’s
thoughts, feelings and ideas can be shared globally, this allows people to be
aware of what happens on the other side of the globe on a daily basis and
basically helps to bring the planet closer together as one group, rather than
the 200+ countries.
No
real ground breaking stuff here, but I just wanted to explain how vital
communication is to globalisation, and how it affects us all.
