globalisation has helped reduce inequality between countries, but is "adding to inequality within countries, as highly skilled workers benefit from new markets, while low- and medium-skilled workers in the west compete with cheaper workers in emerging countries, or with immigrants at home".
The Guardian points out here that globalisation is not always the good thing that capitalist supporters and big business want you to think. It, in reality, makes the poorer worse off and the rich richer. This has been protested against globally by human rights activists who want to see a fairer system.
Globalisation has added millions, indeed
billions, to the world's workforce.
This I fear is the get out clause
for governments. They can argue that they are making/creating jobs
because figures are more important rather than the quality of the jobs.
There is widespread concern about stagnant,
indeed falling, average real incomes in countries such as the UK. To some
extent this is probably down to globalisation and factor price equalisation –
to put it crudely: competition from cheap labour.
Living standards are indeed falling due to the exportation and out sourcing to countries where average pay is lower so the out going costs for businesses is lower therefore increasing profit margins for them. This is an example of what the first point was making. Sadly it's all about the making of money not the idea of compassion and fairness.
Although on a large scale, globalisation is, in effect, 'making the rich richer and the poor poorer', I do feel as though it has also been a huge help to a lot of smaller businesses and has helped them grow or even be created. There are a lot of small businesses that would never have gotten off the ground if it wasn't for their ability to connect to people all around the world within seconds through the internet and so I believe that it has been a good thing for a lot of companies. Also, it has helped people start up their own businesses and network a lot easier, making people able to do what they love and enjoy their job that they have created to suit themselves and their own lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteHowever with this concept of 'the rich get richer and the poor get poorer' the dominant/ richer countries have become a target to extremist attacks because of the globalised use of knowledge on the internet and the ease to enter another country. Also the globalisation of a smaller business to larger businesses this can lose the feeling of a store or remove the reason to why they started their business.
ReplyDeleteI agree with James on the government front as the government most of the time doesn't care about the fine details of things like the quality of jobs given. That they just want the figures. However i feel Jess had a good point about the small businesses and i agree. Small local business have thrived a lot more because of the internet rather than rely on the word of mouth of recommendation. I always try to support local businesses rather than big corporal companies and by doing this more people will benefit from it in good ways.
